My personal vote is for the Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven (if you haven't seen the director's cut and have only seen the theatrical version, then you missed the 1/3rd of the movie that makes the rest make sense).
The Lion in Winter and the Thirteenth Warrior come in as close seconds.

I don't see "Knight's Tale" on your list which is my favourite. The 1952 Ivanhoe gets my vote just for the real stunts and mass battle scenes alone. They did it for real with no CGI.

13Th Warrior gets my vote.
An honourable mention should be made for the 1976 film "Robin & Marion". Staring Hepburn, Connery and Robert Shaw. Great depiction of a dual between two aging warriors and a very surprising ending.

My vote is for kingdom of Heaven. I haven't seen the directors cut though!! 13th Warrior is only just second best...

Hey Phil I don't think the 2005 B&G was worthy of a chance at two votes
13th Warrior was a dramatisation of Chrictons "Eaters of the Dead", being a romanticisation of Ibn Fadlins travelogue. And if we are having Chricton in the list may as well add "Timeline".
For me it has to be "Kingdom Of Heaven" almost a balanced viewpoint, nice speccy gear and showed the Templars to be a bunch of bloodthirsty megalomaniacs. What more could a movie need.
Like Wellybex I haven't seen the Directors Cut. Might have to go hunt it down.
And NO "Princess Bride" shouldn't count. There is nothing Medi about it. it's just eval.

As we can not vote for books (Eco!) I go for the movie The Name of the Rose. On of the few movies who tries to approach an idea with a medieval mindset (see the WMA conference/Charron thread).
Robin and Marian and Kingdom of Heaven are bloody awesome but contemporarily and have hardly any reference to medieval themes (again, see the WMA conference/Charron thread). Sorry! |

The Name of the Rose.
Probably the best all round medieval film made. Evokes the mentalite( need that accent thingy here)of the period better than any of the others on the list.Probably because it is based (quite loosely) on a book written by Umberto Eco, a genuine scholar of the period.
