I was just considering garb for me as a combat archer/crossbowman.
I'm thinking kettle helm over fencing mask (for facial protection) with padded coif to protect from back of head and a leather gorget for neck protection. My Gamby and padded legs for body protection (+ the every necessary box to protect the family jewels). Leather gloves for the hands.
Single sword and buckler at my left side. Canvas bag of bolts at my right, and a combat rated crossbow as my primary weapon.
I'd like to look as close to period as possible (though the mask will obviously look anachronistic).
Suggests/comments welcomed. _________________ Phil Berghan-Whyman

Nice pics.
It might just be me wanting to take over the world, but given that a lot of archers are non-combatants generally, they don't tend to wear club surcoats.
I wonder if it would be worth either those people getting club colours for Taupo OR we start a sort of national archers guild for the sole purpose of wearing matching surcoats on the battlefield... could look really good. Just a thought. |

but for the sircoats perhaps some way to tell club affiliation (if any) as well as the archer colors (1/2 and 1/2 sir coats?)
would be cool

Not sneaky, I have freely admitted that I haven't paid my dues infact I didn't when I was with the Dragons either since I was a non combatant, but I also don't have a surcoat so really nothing sneaky. _________________ did they beat the drums slowly

VERY cool idea.
Pick your guild colour and use club affiliations as achievements on the surcoat. Kind of like Justin's shield.
Now, what are you going to call yourselves?

LOL.
I like 'Up Yours', and I can imagine the heraldry to with it, but it's perhaps not quite so public friendly.
Do we actually need a name? It wouldn't be a club or group as such, just a designation that you're an archer. Something for people to add to their kit, so that when everyone else is kitted up and looking pretty on the battlefield, the archers can look like actual archers instead of a bunch of townsfolk who picked up bows at the last minute because the army was on holiday.
I'm assuming that people would want to do this, or would people prefer to just wear their normal kit?
