I'm looking for some discussion on what the standard spear point should be...

For NAAMA and for elsewhere.

The UK mostly requires a flattened 12mm ball on the point of spears or similiar pointy weapons,
this has some benifits
1. MUCH more surface area than any possible flat curve, therefore reduced injury when someone cocks it up!
2. As per above shields don't get damaged so much, helmut visors can safely be 9mm wide slits, etc
3. When it public places, carrying 3m poles around attacts less public concern since they are obviously not sharp.

Only disadvantage that I can see is that they look 'a bit less real'.

Any other views ?

Giiday, you might want to have a chat with Dave Smith or Roy Harding. They put the raven spears together in an eight lot about six years ago and we've still got five of them in service. Nice safe heads without the pinball on the end.

Roy can be reached through the ME site and Dave will be at the Jousting in Wellington this weekend.

Failing that just have a look at the ones the Ravens have at Easter Camp or email Jason via the raven website and ask him for one of the heads.

With regards to using spears in re-enactment combat if people are causing injury with spears they probably need to look at how they are using it. If you are hurting people without a ball tip adding one probably wont make crap all difference (you'll just get a different shaped bruise).

It shouldnt matter what sort of visor you have your spear shouldnt be in someones face anyway. Strikes to shields should still be pulled but then shields are usually considered disposable items so expect them to take damage.

Cant say I have ever had a problem with this. If its a big deal you could always wrap the spear head up in something.

Valid points Victor, I'm not disagreeing in any specific.

If people pulled shots more reliably,
If accuracy was better,
If....

My point is that, with all good intentions, it doesn't always happen.

Is it worth gradually up'ing the standard (as we replace things normally, I'm not suggesting mass replacement)? We have done this over the years with other kit, it can be done for combat too.

(I'm not fanatical, its just a discussion point that I happen to be in favour of)

I think its a good idea if people want to do it, but could be difficult to convince a lot of people that it makes a difference. Years ago I had a weapon tip with a ball bearing welded on it, it looked weird and I got a bit of crap for it but at the time I believed it was making my thrusts nicer to my opponents so I'm sure lots of people will prefer to fight those who have taken the time to do this over others that havent.
