What do you meand by a raised / stepped handle?

Is there a picture or link you can show me?

Not sure if that's the proper terms for it but anyway...

Flat handle on left and stepped / raised handle on right

Your raised handle is a very good idea. As long as it is not raised TOO much.
It has often been a problem to get your left hand comfortably behind the boss, unless the boss is VERY big. This would help a lot. Too much though and it would be easier to knock the shield out of your hand in combat with the extra leverage.
