Sorry guys, but I gotta say that both 'play' and 'fencing' are the correct historical terms for what we do. Idiot questions aside, you should wear those labels with pride.

Stupid questions?
Not exactly re-enactment based, but...
I once worked as a tour guide in Edinburgh. You had to dress up, take on a persona and do an historical walking tour of the old town for the punters.

You got a lot of dumb questions, but the cracker had to be a young american tourist who asked me "why did they build the castle so close to the railway tracks?"

Had to laugh.

Worst reactions to re-enactment usually come from emergency room staff

When I got poked in the eye back in my halcyon days of noobhood, the nurse at the eye ward watched me walk in with a huge patch on my eye I walked up to her and said
" My hand hurts"
she replied "Yeah right...what happened"
"Ahhh I got stabbed in the eye with a sword"
"What?"
"I got stabbed in the eye with a sword."
"Look I have had a long day and I am really not in the mood for jokes so just tell me what happened please."
"I got stabbed in the eye with a SooooWwwwOooooRrrrrrDdddddd," I point to BigMac, "He did it."
Nurse looks at Mike
"Ok whatever you say sign here"

funniest bit of feed back i got was when my partner and i were throwing live spears at each other catching them and throwing them back. was at a relay for life event and some guy playing the guitar on stage was watching us and said that it looked like we were having a bit of a domestic.

one training we had some weird hippie lover guy come up and say
"put your weapons down, make love not war"

Funny, they didn't react like that when I walked into the akld hospital bleeding from two injuries around my eye....mind you they DID have me sit in the waiting room for over an hour. I believe that one was a rugby accident. Landed on a stick.

The teeth were a hockey accident. The chin was playing in a building site. Don't think I've blatantly said I got smacked in the <body part> with a sword/axe/spear

Funny how the excuses can be more interesting than the injury...

"How did you get that hole in your hand?"
"I was unloading the dishwasher, and wasn't being careful." Smile

or

"That'll need stitching. How did it happen again?"
"My dog saw a rabbit and dragged me through a fence."
"And your leg was the only thing that was cut?"
"Yes." Smile

For me, it was far more the fact that the local A&E recognised us by the surcoat and kept the lectures to a minimum, but were far more interested in how the accident happened.

That said, lying on my back, waiting for a doctor after a training accident (when we were a little tired) that had resulted in my taking a sword to the face on my birthday was bad enough.

Waiting for over an hour - to the point that the centre had closed for the night before I got treated.... yeah. That wasn't as impressive.

The fact that you were dressed like a medieval norseman made no never mind.

Was that the one where you ran your weapon up his inner thigh and caused him to shout wahoo, or the one where you to kept going a it until you figured out who was better with two hands?

It's not just with both hands but speed as well.... you have been seen leaping on a great big solid.... thing and wail away at it with both hands at Mordavia. Other people present didn't believe how fast your hands were moving... until many who knew you said just how fast you were beating away.
