Of course it was the short sax that brought fame to those tricky dicky Saxons, the comitatus of Hengest in the service as mercenaries of that despotic tyrant, tyrannus surperbus, Vortigern of the Celts, in the days of the Kings of the Island of Britain. After years of discord between the Romano-Britains and the Saxons (and Angles and Jutes) a Peace Conferance was called as there could be a treaty. (It's from the use of the short dagger that the Saxons got their name.)

According to legend, at the Giants Dance, known today as Stonehenge. Before the Peace talks were held there was to be a feast. Of course no weopons were to be carried but Hengest counselled his comrades to hide a small sax in their high boots.

At a a given signal the Germani pulled out their secret daggers and slew the celt at the table sitting next them with their little sax. His own comitatus slaughtered at the feasting benches (the flower of British nobility), Vortigern, sweating somewhat, was made to cede more land to Hengist and marry Hengest's daughter Rowena (with Hengest's toothpick at his throat.)

And people say that Roman Legionaries weren't Gentlemen? Mind you Rowena was said to be pretty (in that flaxen Germanic sort of way).

Seax, Drugs and Rock and Roll? Love and Death?

Ahhhhhhh............. The lovely fair Rowena Hengistdottir, with her honey blond Pigtails and her over the Shoulder, Boulder holders! A little stolid and sullen maybe in that Teutonic way but wouldn't you be if your Old Man married you off to a dribbling, grey haired geriatric Celt, the so called High King of those grovelling snivelling Britons, in exchange for a sad bit of Kentish dirt and a mercenary pay rise.

There are those who say that she was the mother of the pirate Cerdic of the West Saxons, Arthursbane, and therefore distant ancestor of the cerdinga Queen Elizabeth II, current Highdof the Britons and Angles.

And that story, of course, is the original "Night of the Long Knives", much beloved of Germanic folklore, and is the name given to the night in early 1934 when Hitler decided to get rid of all the senior leadership of the now pesky SA (Sturmer Abteilung), Ernst Rohm etc.

One would have to consider the kind of spirit filling the blade. I wouldnt want a tree hugging hippies bones spirit filling the blade of a deadly weapon that I owned. That would hardly be productive in a battle. But as a quirky cultural thing I am sure it serves a purpose.
