I am training in Single Sword 14thC and have decided it is time to get a sword.
there are heaps listed on TradeMe like;
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=272902127
It looks pretty average to me. Would something like this be the way to go?
Can anyone suggest which brands of swords to watch out for, Good and Bad...
or is that too big a topic to start, if so apologies
thanks |

Welcome to the 14thCentury Mafia!
the Cas/Hanwei swords like what you linked to are a good, cheap place to start, though that one is a good 400-500 years too early.
Some of the Windless range are also ok while in the upper pricce band there are the likes of Albion and Armourclass.
King of Swords, Wargod and Superior Steel ar all good NZ merchants, and there are a number in Oz as well. _________________ Paper, Scissors, Poleaxe |

you could get away with the Hanwei practical series 'knightly sword' and the 'Hand and a half'.
I have the practical Norman and one of the other guys has the hand and a half, both are holding up well blade wise, though I had to sort the grip on the norman and the hand and a half has just recently split at the join in the leather so needs to be glued.
Also the hand and a half gets used in longsword as well.
you would prob get a better deal from the sites that Nathan posted as TM can be a good deal more!..

For a starter sword practical CAS for lightness, Cost and durability
deepeeka swords are made the old way, hammered and they are spring steel, but they are heavy and a littlt more expensive
Winlass are like CAS but more expensive
The Albion and Armourclass swords you have to sell an arm and leg to get, which means that will effect your sword play ......
where to get it from yes we are all good blokes
the differences is king of swords has a retail shop so we are easy to find
and yes we do Sponsor lots of events .....but what it boils down to ..... who's got the best price and with all of us.... ask for the discounts ....lol _________________ KING OF SWORDS FOR ALL YOUR S.C.A, N.A.A.M.A, L.A.R.P BATTLE NEEDS www.kingofswords.co.nz

Hail the 14thC mafia.
Could I get away with a Norman sword? Maybe Granddad kept it in good order and passed it down?

I second that, a good one, at least 1.6mm thick, at least...... _________________ I have learned that a drunk man's level of courage can be measured by the thickness of the door he is locked behind |

Been a while since I looked up the exact spec's, but most everyone else suggest/expect/recommend/require 2mm. 0.4mm may not seem like much on page, but can make the world of difference on the field. _________________ Hail the Sky Traveller |

being a single sword fan, and having one the Easter competition. (when Dread Patchini (Patch) was away) I have found that any sword heaver then around 3'4 pounds is slowing you down far too much. for light well balanced swords I would advise. Tinker or Windlass, though it depends on your budget and personal style.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Antiques-collectables/Militaria/Swords/auction-290684320.htm is good for keeping you opnent at bay. any keeping your own distance.
but http://www.trademe.co.nz/Antiques-collectables/Militaria/Swords/auction-290684322.htm is fine if you are perpard to always take the Extra step in with most stikes. bit the its is lighter.
to be honest i would have to say try other peoples swords (if they let you) and find one that suits you then get somthing simalr.
hope this helps, if you have anymore Questions PM me =]
