CG I:33 Falling under the sword

I'm considering doing a CG interpretation of the I:33, using Blender. I've got a
static proof of concept up at I:33 Falling Under in Blender.

The ghosting of previous moves needs work. it'd be better if previous figures
got progressively more transparent. At the moment I've just made them
darker. Also the feet are too hard to see from the angle I've chosen, and it is
impossible to tell whether the foot is flat, or on the balls, or which one moved
first. I also need to add in the path of the sword. Work in Progress. Once that
is done I'll animate it. Also see if I can put a 3d viewer in so you can rotate the
scene, in 3d, in your browser.

I've made the feet bigger. Looks good on my Android phone. Does anyone
have an iPhone they can try it on? Particularly want to know if swiping with a
finger to get the next slide works well.

I've found a way to put 3d in the browser. See it in my in comment on I:33
Falling Under in Blender. It may take a little while to load, so be patient. If
you're using Internet Explorer or Safari you will need to switch to a modern
browser like Firefox or Chrome.

Visited your link John. Very good use of a modern technology. We're running our next Order of the Boar workshop in late September so could you arrange to do a small presentation of this there? The workshop is going to be a little bit different anyway as we will be doing some cutting with sharps as well.

I've got most of the structure worked out. I've got the 'Falling Under' play
formatted close to the end result. See Fall Under and Enter. Every play
comes from a folio in the manual. So I link to the source folio(s), at
the end.

As the I33 is the source, I am importing that before working on my
interpretation. I'm using a translation by Dieter Bachmann, with his
permission. I don't know how this compares with Dr Forgeng's translation.
As I'm going I'm Anglicizing the German words. I'm also switching some of
his English words for ones that are closer to the Vulgar Latin, eg. "It is to be
seen" is replaced with "Note" where the source is "Notandum". I'm doing
this quickly at the moment, and will come back later to polish the
translation. You can see my import progress at I:33 Manual. My main
improvements are that the translations switch from side by side, to
vertical when using a phone, and I've got images that are much larger.

I've added a couple more folio, and I've just sent an email to Royal Armouries seeking permission to use their images. Hopefully the give approval. I think they will based on their License page.

One of the things I wanted to do was make it easy to find a combination of guard, counter, and technique. I've got filtering working, on a test page http://johnflower.org/i33/filters. It looks ugly, and I've over tagged Long Point, and under tagged the techniques. I also want to make it auto refresh (through AJAX), instead of having to click the 'Apply' button.

Up to folio 21v. Almost at the point of doing some more original work :)

All the Folio are there now.

I did ask RA for permission to use the images. They limited me to 6. I've decided to go ahead anyway. My reasons are:-

1) The I.33 is out of copyright
2) The I.33 was stolen twice, once in 1550, and again in 1945. It is illegal and immoral to profit from crime.
3) Wikipedia has reproduced some of the images, with this explanation:-
"This image is in the public domain because under United States copyright law, originality of expression is necessary for copyright protection, and a mere photograph of an out-of-copyright two-dimensional work may not be protected under American copyright law. The official position of the Wikimedia Foundation is that all reproductions of public domain works should be considered to be in the public domain regardless of their country of origin (even in countries where mere labor is enough to make a reproduction eligible for protection)."

High quality photos of all of the 1.33 pages along with a modern translation is available through Dr. Jeremy Forgeng's book on 1.33 published in 2003. It's out of print now and second hand copies are getting quite expensive but if you can get a copy it will assist you greatly.

Thanks Callum. I was very tempted to spend $200 usd to buy a secondhand one a couple of weeks back. I know that Dr Forgeng is bringing out a new version, high quality, 100s of dollars.

It'd be interesting to see how his 2003 translation differs from Dieter's.

For now I'm concentrating on formatting what I have and then adding my own interpretation, in parallel. Maybe I'll be able to get higher quality images in the future.
