Is your shield flat or convex?

Hi Jim,the shield is flat,i dont know how i got two photos of the same side? there was supposed to be one of the back with the handle etc.
Im trying to decide on paint colours then padding and straps for the back.

And rawhide around the edge! I used doggie chews from the supermarket, soaked them over night and tacked them around the shield...my colours a Red/Yellow in a Gronny pattern (I think its called)..I can't post a pic here as its to big though I think I have an old pic under my profile, its a heater shield mind you and not a viking/round shield, it doesn't have a historic style grip system, oneday I'll make a historically correct version, but for now I'm more in the 15th C than the 13th C that I was hanging about in!
As I side note do you make shield bosses?
Also we (here in Dunedin) don't so much do any re-anacting, though we are not opposed to it, we are practice/learning Liechtenauer (German style 15th C.) longsword.
cheers. Jim

Yes Jim,i have read about the dog chews for edging of the shield, would that be stronger than ordinary leather,i think that the chews would harden better.
That is the first boss i have made and im happy with it though not an expert as i have never seen one other than photos,a lot of it was guess work but i think im close.
The stump i used is macro, but too soft, and last week end i got a bloody heavy bluegum one and am going to try that, its harder and will be better for blocking out on.
This gear im making is all beginer stuff,it would be interesting to view what others have made some time as i have a lot to learn on the subject.

Kenny: If you haven't found 'MyArmoury' yet follow the link it will take you to the 'show us your kits and harnesses' page, 64 pages of peoples working collections and self made gear, plus MyArmoury is a great site to check anyway..

To KOS: We don't have a proper Ammagedon, infact I think our closest is the Anime expo, but on that none of my peoples have any kit other than a sword and fencing mask.

get some canvas and staple it to the shield covering the whole front and stapled where the dog chew will cover it,
get some pva glue and mix with some water and cover the canvas real good
(make sure you cut and staple around the hole for your boss)
when it is dry you can paint on it and put the dog chews and boss on.
this will help with the strength of the shield so you can make it lighter it also gives you a nice surface to paint on and also resists chips and cuts from swords axes arrows etc

hope this helps ya in your way towards the great shield wall
