You haven`t answered my question. Lets try again. In order for you guys to shoot at each other`s heads, all the other infantry have to stick metal grills over their faces ?

We're shooting at the infantry's heads too, you know. If you are on the field during heavy missle combat, you're a target. Unless you're a marshal - marshals get to be grumpy when someone shoots them.

You still haven`t answered that question. Do the infantry have to wear eye protection at all times while archers are on the field ?

During combat that has been designated as heavy missile combat, ALL participants - including archers, infantry, and marshals - must wear the minimum required armour, which includes eye protection.

All combatants on the field - including archers and infantry - are valid targets.

Is that clear enough?

Combat archery has not previously been done in this form at NAAMA.

You have read the discussions, right?

Who's chest will we be measuring againist? I'm 6'4" where as Angel is 5'mumble. This sort of rule is what can cause injury. While those who know me know that i have issues with most of the SCA fighting system (though their gear is cool) starting with a proven safe system would be the best way to begin, this is the first time we have tried this sort of thing. We can always reduce requirments but it would only take one bad day at the start to stuff the whole thing.

I have been on the recieving end of some of Daves shots without these sorts of armour regs but that is because i trust the one man taking the shot. When you have large numbers the chances of bad things happening dramaticlly increase. I'm compleatly behind this project but will not take the field without vitals covered properlly.

Many of those taking the field will have never done any combat archery before. The need for pre-battle practice is vital. I cannot state that strongly enough. The disipline is entirely different to that of target archery.

So can we go on with safety googles if we don't have mesh visors?

Looks like we're going with full face protection, rather than just the eyes.

Ok , so here is a hypothetical question: You are a warrior and are fighting with another infantry man. An archer shoots you full in the face. What do you do to the archer ?

Hey related to this, does anyone know where to get full-face helms with mesh over the face/half face and eyes? Looking for something like this for head blow combat too!

Assuming this is a heavy missile combat scenario, and everyone is in the required armour, and nothing untoward has occurred.

Firstly, congratulate them on a fine shot!

Secondly, curse and swear at the accuracy of your opponent's archers.

Thirdly, attempt to get them during the next scenario (you're dead in the one where you were shot). They may fight you if they have weapons at hand, or they may yield. Either way, they aren't shooting any more of your team mates in that round.

Has happened to me a moderate amount, from both sides of the situation, (although mostly these days I'm the archer.) Generally, an arrow bouncing off my faceplate is quite noticeable, so I die, and leave the field/go to the resurrection point. Why do I have to do anything to the archer? They've killed me legitimately, and in the midst of a melee, I'm not likely to notice which archer it was got me anyway.

Although some years back we did have a chap who never took arrow shots at Festival, so some peeved archers put lipstick on the ends of their blunts, and pointed out to him after a scenario that he had five clear red strikes to his faceplate and chest, and maybe he'd be more likely to acknowledge good hits in the future.

Cheers

Dr Zane
