I think you are a little off-topic. Try the archery forum. For myself, I never shoot at heads or faces.

The difference between raising a spear and that of a longsword mainly in the lenghs. It takes more time to move a spear tip than a swords (even if only a fraction of a second) and this delay could be the difference between a bruise and a serious injury.

The potential for the face injury thing lies in distance, a spear usually being a bit longer than a long sword and moving things around too close to peoples faces increases the chance of an injury. If it takes someone longer to move a spear then they need to allow themselves the distance to do so safely. If you are aware of your distance when holding a spear and are trained to do a head blow strike with it with control it works fine. It might not be a historical technique but then I have seen what kind of cutting/hewing power a sharp spear really has, so its a good compromise.

Of more concern should be the weapons mass and if the weilder can control/pull the strike. For example dane axes tend to be a bit harder to control but still pass the level of your opponents face (just do it at an appropriate distance).

Stuart, head blow strikes can be perfectly safe with weapons larger than a seax, provided they are able to be controlled. You may as well stop people doing head blow with swords due to the potential that "some half-trained twit will go direct to the head with the point in the heat of battle". And whats to stop the same twit doing this with a seax anyway?

If you cant control it, dont use it.

My here was that a pole weapon has a far greater potential for misuse.

The NZN allow and actively use spears with which to strike the helmet the same as any other weapon.
We allow use of this weapon this way, because otherwise I will enjoy stabbing your eyes out which would be no1 target anyway.
We train EVERY single week for up to 4 hours and over the last ten years that the NZN have been doing so we have never had a single injury either directly or indirectly from this.
Fighting at Taupo Great Lakes Tourney in both 2006 and 2007 I used in BOTH combat arenas a spear in this manner. I cannot recall a single person complaining about either the use or my use of the gerrir in this way either year.

Reading the above comments one MUST conclude that 10 years is a sufficient testing period and with 0% injuries one MUST also conclude that it can be done safety.

Frey Inigo I believe could give a similar account for his face thrusts and chops.

Why then are people debating whether it is safe? Even some human consumption chemicals don’t get tested for 10 years.

No one was talking about the NZN.

Njal, step back. Earlier in this thread, Stuart was talking up your club.

Don't go annoying everyone just because you can eh?

So who is interested in doing some head blow combat with horizontal chops and face thrusts?

Yep, but we used rattan not steel.

Njal, what does "Frey" mean? I thought he was the Norse god of sex or something.

Ha! Yes he is but in this context it is used in replace of Herr as defined below.

HERR - sir
FREY - master; could also be used in formal context to address a respected equal

I am, but need to armour up first. Headblow rated helmet with suspension harness, plate-steel face protection. Time is the only issue at the momemt. Anything to get away from that ridiculous leg-jabbing...

Could you give me some information about what sources that's based on? I'd be very interested.
