Then get upset when a French sabre outcuts their two handed katana.

I was trying to find a link to that test cutting encounter between a French colonel with his sabre versus some samurai with their Japanese sabre (aka the katana). The first attempt was against a tree, the katana used in two hands went into it 3cm, the French sabre 5cm. Then there was something to do with umbrellas for which the French sabre did better again. The bit I found amusing was the request to use straw as the next test, but the colonel refused saying his sabre was for cutting people not hay. Alas the link I did have is broken and I cannot find an equivalent Sad

Stephan,

It has everything to do with how the harmonics (sine waves) in a sword work (i.e., physics, not magic). That's the best answer you're going to get out of me in a public forum.

Charging isn't about adding power into your swing, it's about breaking enemy formations and closing distance.

When test cutting you want to be as relaxed as possible. It's not about whacking stuff as hard as you possibly can. You can hit something really hard and still not make as deep a cut compared to a lighter strike using correct technique.

It's a bit like the perfect golf swing. It looks likes a slow lazy relaxed shot, and hits like a truck.
