Who else still remembers reenactor Peter Russell, died 2003, a member of our Legion amd the Auckland Norse?
Yes that's right, the solo play"The Orderly"by Mike Downey is on again, and this time the whole season is"Pay what you like"!ie you just book, turn up then pay what you think the Show was worth!
"The Rebel Alliance boldly goes where no one has ever gone before. We have left the ticket prices up to the audience for our emtire upcoming season of The Orderly. You see the play and make a donation afterwards!
The Orderly is on during the annual Hospice Awareness Week and we're donating half of our box office takings to North Shore Hospice and Mercy Hospice Auckland."
The Second Legion Augusta organised a major Reenactment Display at Aotea Square in Memory of Peter Russell, the last time this play was on at The Edge.

Prof Edward James: "How to recognise a barbarian".
"Recognising the barbarian enemies of the Roman Empire used to be easy: they had horned helmets, funny names, and thick Germanic accents. Perhaps the main result of the work by historians and archaeologists on late antiquity during the last generation has been to show how very wrong and misleading the stereotypes of barbarians actually are."
Professor James is a medievalist from University College Dublin.

We watched a new release called "The Last Legion". It is worth a look. Some interesting missiles and a few mixes of traditional story lines. Not a historically acurate portrayal but fun.

"The Last Lagion" has some historical figures (474AD), Romulus Augustus, the last boy Emperor of the West and Odovacar, the barbarian Scirian, and some good actors, Ben Kingsley, Colin Firth and Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai. The Historical elements are extrapolated for the story. I really enjoyed it.

"The Battle Of Maldon" was the original title for the Solo actor play"The Orderly" when I first saw this durable work at the University of Auckland about four years ago. It was Mike Downey's offering for his postgraduate degree at the School of Drama. I was stunned and amazed to realise that this Play was about someone I had known in reenactment in the 1990s, Peter Russell, when he was living in Castor Bay with his wife Angie and working at North Shore Hospital. On the weekends of course, Pete was splitting his time between the 2nd Legion Augusta and the west Auckland Norse.
With a large borrowing from the the famous Anglo-Saxon Epic Poem of the doomed Saxon battle at Maldon against Danish pirates, the play takes place entirely within the environs of the North Shore Hospital setting with the fictional"Sons of Odin" standing in for the local Auckland clubs.
"The Orderly"was reviewed yesterday in PartB of the New Zealand Herald on pages 4 and 5 and in the TimeOut magazine. The short season 1 week starts on Monday at the Herald Theatre,Aotea Centre,The Edge, before it leaves New Zealand for a season in Melbourne.
Mike Downey rang me last weekend to say that he would really like reenactors to attend and that tickets are on a Pay as You Like Basis. Peter Russell died, of course, as a result of his chronic cystic fibrosis in 2003.
